If you have ever built or thought of building a large scale locomotive or car, in fact anything that rides on a scale track, you may have been challenged by the relatively complex profile of a railroad wheel. With several important specifications, including the angle of the wheel tread, the radius where the tread meets the flange, the flange side angle, flange height, and the minimum wheel thickness, a railroad wheel profile is not trivial. Besides being tricky to machine, these parameters need to be adhered to in order to avoid damage to rails, switches and other equipment. And older wheels also need to be checked regularly for excessive wear. That's where the OMW Wheel Gauge comes in. Simply hold the gauge up to your wheel tread to check the profile and make adjustments as necessary. Use the other end of the gauge to check minimum wheel thickness.

The OMW Wheel Gauge is precision CNC machined from the highest quality tool steel, .032" thick. It is available in the most common wheel tread standard, the widely used wheel profile named for the International Brotherhood of Live Steamers (IBLS). The OMW Wheel gauge is available in a 1" scale or 1.5"/1.6" scale version (this larger size can be used to check most 2.5" scale narrow gauge equipment as well). Specify scale desired.
